In 1996, Yoshiko founded with her
husband, Bruce Smith, The Arts & Crafts Press in Berkeley, teaching herself (with the help of
wonderful mentors) the craft of letterpress printing. For her limited edition
prints, Yoshiko first sketches, and after multiple drawings and water colors,
she begins cutting blocks. Sometimes she works with wood blocks, usually
cherry, and other times she chooses linoleum. Yoshiko takes the blocks and
prints each color separately on a Vandercook printing press, using as many as
twenty blocks per print to achieve the desired effect. Yoshiko now resides in a
small coastal town of Washington
with Bruce and their children.
This print was created from sketches Yoshiko did while visiting The Gamble House in 2007.
